Yemi Solade questions fate of celebrities flaunting 'absurd' doctorates from Benin

The FG recently announced that thousands of people are using fake degree's obtained from degree mills institutions in Benin Republic, Togo and others.


Nollywood veteran, Yemi Solade, has weighed in on the Federal Government's recent decision to clamp down on Nigerian graduates parading fake certificates from foreign universities.

The actor posed his question via an Instagram post on August 25, 2024, asking the minister of education, Prof Tahir Mamman what would happen to the honorary degrees given to Nigerian celebrities.

His post caption read, "What Happens To ALL The ABSURD Doctorate Degrees Splashed On Nigerian Celebs Since FG Has Pronounced That Degrees Acquired From Benin Republic Since 2017 Are INVALID? 👀"

The actor's followers took to the comment section to weigh in on the issue. A follower wrote, "Valid Question.. But the answer is so clear.. Never to be used," and another comment read, "Waste of money on frivolous degrees."

This comes on the heels of the announcement by the Federal Government that no fewer than 21,600 graduates use fake certificates obtained from degree mills institutions in Benin Republic, Togo and others.

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, disclosed this during a ministerial press briefing on his one-year achievements in the ministry, in Abuja on August 23, 2024. He stressed that said fake degrees from Nigerian and foreign universities would be flushed out of the system.

He said, “The federal government has directed that the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) issue circular to flush out anybody with fake certificates from these institutions.

“In Togo, there are three universities that are officially approved and licenced to offer degree courses and in Benin Republic, we have five institutions licenced for degree courses,” he added.

Breaking News: Police invade Abuja NLC headquarters

Heavily armed Policemen late Wednesday night invaded the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Headquarters, Abuja, commonly known as Labour House. Though details of the invasion is still sketchy, Vanguard gathered that the stern looking policemen stormed the Labour House some few minutes to 9 pm and ransacked both the Second and 10th floors. A source told Vanguard that “Comrades, armed security men, both in uniform and mufti just invaded the Labour House in their numbers and were at the 10th Floor and 2nd Floor. “They broke into second floor and ransacked books at the bookshop carrying all the materials into their van claiming that the materials were used to incite and organize the recent protest.”

Simon Ekpa, a controversial Biafra agitator, has hired an American lobbying firm, Moran Global Strategies (MGS), to advance agitation for the independent state of Biafra. NLC plans mass procession as Ajaero honours police invitation

Barring any last-minute change in plans, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, will today (Thursday) honour the summons by the police over allegations of treason and terrorism financing. Ahead of today’s visit to the police headquarters in Abuja, the NLC Central Working Committee, on Wednesday, issued a circular, mobilising the union members and affiliate associations for a march on the police head offices across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The police had, in an invitation last week, asked Ajaero to appear at the Force headquarters on Tuesday, August 20, by 10 am to answer questions on his alleged involvement in terrorism financing, cybercrime, subversion, criminal conspiracy, and treasonable felony. The invitation came in the wake of a night raid by the police on the NLC national secretariat in Abuja. 161 Nigerian students fail UK border checks, denied entry

No fewer than 1,425 international students who gained admission to universities in the United Kingdom were denied entry at the country’s airports between 2021 and 2023. A total of 161 Nigerians were affected, as they were removed on arrival at airports across the UK. According to data exclusively obtained from the UK Home Office through the Freedom of Information Act, India topped the list of affected foreign students with 644, representing 45 per cent of the figure, while Nigeria followed with 11.3 per cent. Ghana is third on the list with 92 (6.46 per cent), while Bangladesh is fourth with 90 (6.32 per cent). However, the released data, covering October 2021 to October 2023, is limited to students denied entry at the airports. It does not include international students deported by the Home Office for violating the terms of their visas, such as working beyond 20 hours weekly and academic malpractice.
