Electricity Meter payments to be spread over 10 years, says The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has clarified that electricity consumers who get free prepaid meters will have up to 10 years to repay the cost.


Adelabu’s statement contradicts claims that customers who pay for meters would be refunded through energy credit.

Speaking recently in Ibadan, the minister, who acknowledged that the cost of meters had been on the increase, said funding was a major challenge.

According to Adelabu, the Federal Government would fund the meter procurement through different initiatives while the customers pay back over time.

“We can get funding for this meter and allow the customers to pay over time.

“When the government starts procuring meters, we’ll give it to the customers, and we’ll deduct the money over 10 years. In which case, you will not even feel it at all,” he stated.

He explained further that a customer who bought an energy credit of N5,000 might have N100 deducted for the ‘free’ meter he got from the government.

“Probably, if you buy a credit of N5,000, maybe N100 will go into the meter that we have given you. So, that’s what we are trying to do. We bring these meters in and reduce the gap that we have in the meters,” he posited.

Adelabu maintained that the Federal Government and the states had raised N100bn for the procurement of prepaid electricity meters.

He explained, “Mr President has set up what we call the Presidential Meter Initiative and set up a Presidential Meeting Council to address this issue. He made me the chairman of this council. The SA on Energy to Mr President is the secretary of the council. The mandate we have was to procure and install a minimum of 2 million meters on a yearly basis over the next five years.

“In the PMI, we have made good progress in sourcing the fund for this, and it is going to be by a combination of the federal and state governments. Today, we have received, and seen about N100bn fund that will go into the procurement of meters.”

He added that the World Bank decided to support Nigeria with the procurement of almost two million meters in the next two years through the distribution sector recovery programme.

He disclosed that $200m out of the $500m DISREP fund would be used for meter procurement, saying that had reached an advanced stage.

Breaking News: Police invade Abuja NLC headquarters

Heavily armed Policemen late Wednesday night invaded the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Headquarters, Abuja, commonly known as Labour House. Though details of the invasion is still sketchy, Vanguard gathered that the stern looking policemen stormed the Labour House some few minutes to 9 pm and ransacked both the Second and 10th floors. A source told Vanguard that “Comrades, armed security men, both in uniform and mufti just invaded the Labour House in their numbers and were at the 10th Floor and 2nd Floor. “They broke into second floor and ransacked books at the bookshop carrying all the materials into their van claiming that the materials were used to incite and organize the recent protest.”

Simon Ekpa, a controversial Biafra agitator, has hired an American lobbying firm, Moran Global Strategies (MGS), to advance agitation for the independent state of Biafra. Mr Ekpa, based in Finland, heads Autopilot, a faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). IPOB is a separatist group agitating for the creation of an independent state of Biafra from south-east and some parts of south-south Nigeria. NLC plans mass procession as Ajaero honours police invitation

Barring any last-minute change in plans, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, will today (Thursday) honour the summons by the police over allegations of treason and terrorism financing. Ahead of today’s visit to the police headquarters in Abuja, the NLC Central Working Committee, on Wednesday, issued a circular, mobilising the union members and affiliate associations for a march on the police head offices across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The police had, in an invitation last week, asked Ajaero to appear at the Force headquarters on Tuesday, August 20, by 10 am to answer questions on his alleged involvement in terrorism financing, cybercrime, subversion, criminal conspiracy, and treasonable felony. 161 Nigerian students fail UK border checks, denied entry

No fewer than 1,425 international students who gained admission to universities in the United Kingdom were denied entry at the country’s airports between 2021 and 2023. A total of 161 Nigerians were affected, as they were removed on arrival at airports across the UK. According to data exclusively obtained from the UK Home Office through the Freedom of Information Act, India topped the list of affected foreign students with 644, representing 45 per cent of the figure, while Nigeria followed with 11.3 per cent. Ghana is third on the list with 92 (6.46 per cent), while Bangladesh is fourth with 90 (6.32 per cent). However, the released data, covering October 2021 to October 2023, is limited to students denied entry at the airports. It does not include international students deported by the Home Office for violating the terms of their visas, such as working beyond 20 hours weekly and academic malpractice.
